Maskenfreiheit is a photography project by Lilli Weinstein about her desire to not to be shy, the constant pressure to come out of her shell and finding a way of turning her fears into strength. For this project she invited strangers through hand-written letters she hid in the park close to her home. They met in her living room and engaged in a game of performing her personal fears. The way she thought of her encounters is inspired by the German word Maskenfreiheit. It refers to the freedom that comes from wearing a mask. “Setting up the camera and stepping in front of it feels like putting on a mask which allows me to act in a more honest way than I could ever be.“
The documented encounters are assembled in the perfomative publication — a soft cover book with Japanese binding and thin, almost transparent paper reflect her vulnerability and the tenderness that emerged from the encounters. Handwritten letters, text and images merge into each other and thus create a composition of thoughts, feelings and personal growth.
