Zimmermann

Nikolai Brokolovsky’s film Zimmermann is about the work of a Zimmerman who in a certain tradition, has to undergo a time of travel for several years after completing apprenticeship as a craftsman. The tradition dates back to medieval times and is still alive in France, Scandinavia and the German-speaking countries.
The cut out of the face visualizes a certain ambiguity of the character — on the one hand taking care of manual labour and on the other bringing darkness to people that invite him. It also talks about the facelessness of a Zimmermann: These are individuals that feel a calling to help people and to completely become one with their occupation. Thus it is not about the individual but the calling itself.
